Tendu - Collaborative Art Installation

Curator

Chefchaouen Arts Festival, Morocco, 2004

As artistic director of the festival, I curated Tendu, an art installation by photographer Britt Hatzius. Together with the artist, we conceived a collaborative project with a local women's association, based on the question: What is it that you value most?  The resulting work consisted of a series of photographs of each Chauní woman holding her "treasure." The path to the exhibition was marked with 200 meters of red fabric that guided the visitor to the exhibition space, covered with an awning made from hand-sewn scarves found at local markets.

This project was in line with the three main objectives I set for the festival:

  • Promote open-air artistic interventions on the streets of Chefchaouen, making them accessible to the local community.

  • To foster a genuine cultural exchange between international artists and the community, with special emphasis on women's participation.

  • Promote an artistic language that is understandable to a largely illiterate population.
